For visitors looking for rural pursuits, there are many hundreds of acres of countryside in and around the Borough.
Woking is fortunate in having a wide variety of sites from open heathland to woodland to canalside habitats. The sites can be enjoyed in a variety of ways including walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing and volunteering. Please take notice of signs on the sites that specify any local restrictions.
Some sites are of national importance and have been awarded Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) or Special Protection Area (SPA) status. These designations give the sites legal protection from activities that would result in damage to the land, eg development. There is an obligation on the land owners to manage the areas in a manner that maintains and improves the local flora and fauna. SSSIs are important as they support plants and animals that find it more difficult to survive in the wider countryside and ensure that our remaining natural heritage is preserved for future generations
